Angel Creek - North Pole
(Distanz 110 km, Zeit ca. 7-9 Stunden )
North Pole became an official stretch post in the last years. From Angel Creek the Trail follows the Chena River without large rise, a 20-60 meter wide side river of the Tanana Rivers through North Pole until Fairbanks. Here mooses are also a problem, but now like at the beginning of the race people and the civilization are becoming the largest danger for the last kilometers of the race. There are so many Trails on which the Musher can lose the right way if the Trailbreaker did not mark the Questtrail unusually clear, dogs that curiously barke on teams (or even attack) and so stop them, motor sled and even long course skis that form hindrances.
In spite of intensive attempts of the Yukon Quest as well as
warnings in television and radio, there are each year incidents
of this type. North Pole is a little city approximately 30 km of
Fairbanks and latest here, after 1600 km the teams are again in
the civilization.
Hardly a Musher stops at North Pole, when the finish line is so near. The race
from Angel Creek is, at least for the Mushers in leadership, a thing that is
expedited with bite teeth together, "eyes straight forward" and the
last energy.
Because of that, the Quest had decided from the beginning to introduce a pause
from eight hours for dog and Musher in Angel Creek.
Therefore there are no obligatory rest at North Pole.
