Checkpoint Eagle
The small picturesque place with 150 inhabitants can be attained over the Taylor Highway (only in the summer) and lies at the Yukon River. 1874 the first fur commercial post was established, later followed by the gold graves. These let swell the number of inhabitants on over 1500 and 1901 Eagle, which was named after the eagles, which build their nests at the coasts of the river, was designated as the first city of Alaska. A post office station, a Saloon as well as the first tidy Court of Justice were opened and the US Army established the base Ft. Egbert, which it had to give up at 1911 again. Like also the soldiers also most other inhabitants left Eagles, since they didn’t found the quantities of gold like for example in Dawson. Today they try to restore and re-establish many of the historical buildings. In the summer the Eagle Historic Society organizes city guidance and also the remainders of the Ft. Gebert can by visited. For tourists it gives restaurant, accommodations, business, gas stations and runways.
