Christmas Newsletter

Hello from Fairbanks.

This time I am actually writing these Christmas Greetings BEFORE Christmas, that is an improvement from the last years.

These lines are coming from Alaska. The racing season has begun, last weekend I finished 7th in the Sheep Mountain 150. Anjanette and Zack Steer put on a great show once again. 48 teams turned out for the first race of the season. Weather and Trail were perfect. It was a full moon night, shooting stars all over the skys, temperatures around minus 10F (-15°C). Not much more a musher can ask for. My runs were also perfect for the first 2 heats of 50 miles (80 km). On the third run I loaded 2 dogs about half way. That slowed things down considerably and I am lucky to have gotten 7th place. I have not run behind the sled this much in years.

Once again we are renting cabins from Jenny and Audie of Denali Highway Cabins. The dogs got a few days off after the Sheep Mountain and we started running to McLaren Lodge. What a treat that each time is. How does Steak and Halibut with fresh baked potatoes sound to you? It sure makes me wanting to get there a little bit faster.  It is 42 miles (67 km) from Paxson. That run can be hard packed trail and fast or it can be hell with howling winds over 13 Mile Summit. So far we have been lucky and had great conditions. Although that is a matter of perspective, as it is the hard runs we the dogs and us learn more. On the last run we made some detours to lengthen it to 80 miles (130 km) and were treated to spectacular views. My internet connection in Paxson is real crappy this winter, so I am using my chance to write this, as I am here in Fairbanks for one night. It was time for a supply run of dog and people food.

The racing calendar is pretty full once again. Gin Gin 200 next weekend, still undecided about the Knik 200 the week after,  for sure Copper Basin 300 the 2nd week of January and than the Kusko 300. That should get me and the dogs ready for the double of Quest and Iditarod again.

I hope Andy get's the pictures on this newsletter. Enjoy the views. I wish you all a merry Christmas and all the best for 2009.

Happy trails
Sebastian
