Summer snow
After returning from Germany I only stopped in Whitehorse for a few days. Katrin and Gerhard, two friends from Germany, had arrived and were getting ready to a Canoe Trip on the South Canol Road. Both picked me up at the Airport and after a short night at the kennel we were heading to the South Canol Road, where they were going to start their journey down the Big Salmon River.
From Whitehorse I headed to Juneau to join my dogs for the remainder of the summer. They have been running on the glacier since May and are in prime shape. Running on the vast open glacier is great leader training. Tang, Skunk, Popcorn, Nemo, Inuk are all very solid, I can gee and haw them all over the place, trail or no trail. It is nice to tow a second sled, with a second driver on it, so I am free to go up to the front of the team, to correct things when needed. Now it is time to train some other dogs for leading, Par and Eagle show great promise, even good old shy Franky likes it a lot up here. He finally quit chewing necklines, something I thought was never going to happen. Gold, Silver, Dodge and Dakota, the 4 yearlings also perform very well, I try to limit their runs to 4 miles per day. Certain days up on the glacier are super busy, with tours from morning to evening, but than there are days like today, where the clouds have moved in and we are completely fogged out. Those are natural down days for the dogs, which suit them very well.
Thus I also find time to write this short update. Not much else is new these days, so I keep this one short. Although I like it down here a lot, I am looking forward to return to the "Ranch" in a few weeks as there are quite a few fall projects still waiting to be completed. Have a look at the included pictures (see Album on the right), they speak for themselves.
Have a fun "rest of the summer".
Cheers
Sebastian
