Gin Gin 120
Maren, a dog handler from Sebastian, started at the Gin Gin 120 - a race over 120 miles (192 km) with one checkpoint. The race started with a mass-start on the Paxson Lake, followed the Denali Highway above the tree line, made a 18 miles loop to come to the McLaren Lodge, the checkpoint of the race. After a 8 hours rest the teams travelled back on the same trail but until Meier's Lake Lodge.
To have all dogs on the same training level Pierre and I toke the other dogs and followed with two 14er teams - Sebastian drove as volunteer with the Skidoo.
How was the mass-start?
How was the trail?
Maren: The trail was in good shape. On the way up it was slow (it snowed all the time at 0°C) and on the way back it was a bit faster (-20°C).
How was the loop?
Maren: The loop seamed me longer than it was. We traveled over the tree line, passed a lot of lakes and had to climb some hills (Sebastian had problems to brake trail with his small snowmachine).
How was the homestretch?
Maren: I had some problems to stay awake and the dogs wanted to go to the cabin when we passed them.
What's the conclusion? Never ever or when is the next race?
It was a lot of fun and I like to do more races.
Maren finished the race on the 8th place out of 13 - Congratulations
Andreas
