The Outside Interview
The Musher
Yukon Quest champion Sebastian Schnuelle talks about eating vacuum-packed McNuggets, cooking for canines, and taking on Lance Mackey.
Native German Sebastian Schnuelle wowed the mushing world by smashing time records for the annual Yukon Quest, a 1,000+ mile journey from Whitehorse, Yukon to Fairbanks, Alaska. Despite stopping to help fellow competitors up the steep hills near the end of the race, the Schnuelle finished first in an astounding nine days, 23 hours, and 20 minutes, becoming the first person to cross the finish line in less than ten days. All this from a man that orders bloodwork for his dogs to make sure they’re healthy, but eats vacuum-packed McNuggets himself.
Outside’s Melanie Lidman caught up with Schnuelle before this weekend’s Iditarod.

Sebastian!!
If it weren’t for the cockamamie Chucken McNuggets you’d have done it in under 9 days. Good grief, man. If planned nutrition helps the dogs, think of what it could do for you. Might have you running alongside the slide to lighten the load. Think about it.
Hey! CONGRATULATIONS!!! WINNING THE QUEST IS A MAGNIFICENT EFFORT! IT’S POSSIBLE BECAUE OF YOUR FOCUS AND CONCENTRATION ON THE DOGS. I saw that when we mushed in Ontario and in Whitehorse. I’ve been with mushers all over North America and your understanding of andd handling of the dogs is the best I’ve seen.
You know your business and you deserve to win the big ones. Take care and here’s hoping you pull off another first in the Ididarod.
Best regards,
